Your work getting Laconica up and running is very valuable (because you didn't write it, and thus offer a new perspective to share with the rest of us).

I'm personally interest in doing some sort of load testing, to help prevent recurrences of twitter's broken growth curve.

After that, I'm interested in stopping the inevitable spam that will crop up once the federation really works and interoperability takes off.

Of course, temper this with your previous observation that ideas aren't worth squat.

throttling the basement hacker

This might just be a phase, related to my recent injury and subsequent period of convalescence - but I feel like doing absolutely nothing extracurricular hack-wise after work. This is an odd state of mind for me, since I'm normally never happy unless I've got both work and home projects spinning. It's been somewhat satisfying to get work done and code checked in during the day, then home for dinner and some WoW on the couch next to The Girl. I'd kind of like to get into something more soon, but at present I feel no compulsion to hack, mashup, reverse engineer, invert polarity, or anything else of that nature. In fact, I'm doing a small measure of thinking about into what I do want to get once the itch returns. I've got a half-dozen unfinished short stories, and a geographical region full of people to meet. Maybe once the leg works again, I'll not feel like being such a full-throttle basement hacker anymore. This is weird.

Don't worry. This is perfectly normal. Your brain has gone on holiday for a couple of weeks leaving your body in basic life-support mode. Feed it TV and beer and anything you fancy. Normal service will be resumed in a week or two.

I've got to be particularly careful as a few hours of MMOs can poison my hackish funkitude for weeks at a time.

I suspect, at least for me, that it's the sense of micro-accomplishment. Move a few bars, finish a few quests, get a ding. Woo hoo! I did stuff! :)

Loads of 10% time projects and I can't be bothered to work on any of them. My excuse to myself was re-reading 13th Valley but now I've finished it...

Aquaintances of mine are going through the same thing... so it should pass. Not that I can brag about GTD, personally in a while now.

I did hold my breath for a moment when I read that you relocated out west. Others I've known, were changed in an inexplicable way. They lost something they once had and became more like those they live around. It's difficult to explain.

Is there something in the water, the air, the culture, everything?

world of warcraft is my world of warcraft

Remember when I wrote that hacking is my World of Warcraft? Well, lately, World of Warcraft has been my World of Warcraft. Yes, that's right: I'm on that slippery slope now. My best friend and Best Man back in Michigan handed me a copy of the game as a going-away present, ostensibly to help keep in touch. So, to recouperate from the book writing, the marrying, the moving, and the new job taking - I've been maintaining laziness on the extracurricular hacking front, and WoW has appeared in the vacuum. I can only hope that I don't next progress into a stage of "Hacking WoW is my Hacking". Smack me if my name starts appearing on this site.

Oh and, by the way, if you happen to see a troll named Paytol on Maelstrom, or a gnome named Fizlfry on Eitrigg - say hi!

Never played WoW but Oblivion on the 360 sucked me in enough (and a few friends are addicts) so I know that's one door I don't want to open.

No user serviceable fans

Grr. Last night, My PowerBook suddenly started making the oscillating, growling noise of a fan with built up crud rattling against the blades. I'd thought it was the hard drive at first, knowing my luck, but I narrowed down the sound to the fans in the back and could make the sound go away by cutting back CPU usage.

Normally, as with all the other machines I have, I'd open the sucker up and clean that out with a q-tip or cotton ball. However, this is still under AppleCare for another year or so, and I doubt they'd look kindly on me pawing around inside this thing yet. But, I really don't want to part with it for most of a week, just so they can ship it to someone with a more official screwdriver and Apple-branded cotton swabs.

Apple's official policy is that opening a system up and servicing it yourself doesn't void the warranty as long as you don't break it. At least that's the case on desktops and the Mini, and I'd imagine it extends to laptops as well.

Also, if it's a minor thing, they can probably do it on-site at either the Learning Center in Ann Arbor, or at the Apple Store in in Novi's 12 Oaks mall.

Go to Office Depot and get yourself some air in a can. They call it cleaning duster. The stuff is great for blowing junk out of tight places. You can even freeze stuff with it if you tip the can just right.

It's ozen friendly!
