I hadn't heard "that":http://www.nypress.com/article-18935-knit-fit.html the KnittingFactory is closing down. *f you believe Bucket Bob and every bartender and manager that I talked to at the Knit, the artists are dedicated aesthetes that serve to perpetuate new trends and only need to wake up and do something. The truth of clubs likes the Knit, CBGB and the BottomLine - clubs that keep going past their prime - is a little darker. They exist so that superannuated mid-level rockers, regardless of stripe, can capitalize on their cred and experience, sell it to the next wave and never grow old. Still, a vestigial Knitting Factory is a thousand times better than the condos and velvet-rope restaurants that are replacing it.*

There's "a":http://barcamp.org/MobileCampNYC3 MobileCamp (MobIle BarCamp) coming to NYC on Nov15. (LiveEvent)

Some sessions

* Adding SMS

* speaker: ??? of padpaw: "join fop" 74685

* SMS is not EMail

* sending SMS is a privilege, not a right

  * have to launch "campaign"

   * have to finish first

   * get approved by carriers: 6-8wks

    * they'll test/audit (key concerns: content type/quality; opt-out/quit working; double-opt-in)

   * can make changes afterwards without telling them

   * random audits, no notification

   * if they hate a change, have ~4days to rectify

* small size

* no way to track conversation

* use aggregator

  * mblox?

* limited through-put

  * no broadcast, each recipient is separate

  * often stuck at 2-3 msgs/sec

* you pay for every send, sometimes pay to receive

* short-code

  * single-country

  * $500/mo for random

  * for incoming-only, can get shared short-code

   * user has to type keyword to get to you

   * info411, others

   * a couple free ones out there

    * ask DeanCollins

* future

  * want to replace SMS

   * avoid cost

    * $0.05/msg is like $50CPM

   * but needs to as simple as SMS, and promoted by something as big as AmericanIdol

* DeviceAnywhere

* provides ecosystem of devices to test your app on

* Design Challenge: Social Market Support for Physical Retail Shopping (some ITP alums)

* Market

* smartphones

  * 10% share (US) now, 31% in 5yrs

  * increasing GPS support

* FutureOfWireless

* speaker: IanSpalter, RGA

* multiple devices per person

  * dedicated purposes?

  * BlackBerry browser still sucks

   * he doesn't know why

   * someone says Opera good on BlackBerry

* sharing increasingly automated by device

* GeoTag

* Nokia market systems for EmergingMarket-s

  * data via SMS

* 2D BarCode (QR)

  * not much US adoption

  * DeanCollins said 1-carrier experiment in Australia got surprising uptake

   * lots of people willing to download apps

* NFC NearField

  * phone as wallet

  * not much US adoption

* WiMAX vs LTE for 4G

* what's future/wireless equiv of RSS?

  * invisible, leveraging standard

City services, then LocationBasedService: DennisCrowley DodgeBall

* social coord, dating

* find free stuff, trashed stuff

* IPhone SingleThreaded limit a problem: can't be pinged while it's in your pocket, not in front

* street games PacManHattan (company is AreaCode)

* (I mentioned system where people check-in when they arrive at club, and their recent-playlists are uploaded, and the DJ works just from all the combined lists. Looking it up now, I find the "article":http://www.springwise.com/entertainment/tony_player_takes_online_playl/ about TonyPlayer.)

* add ComputerGame-like scoring access to everything

* (likelihood of simplistic ArtificialScarcity that kills life?)

* *NudgIng* book: nudge people into having more interesting life

  * Nov19 update: excellent example "is":http://www.insidesocialgames.com/2008/10/06/interview-with-austin-hill-co-founder-and-ceo-of-akoha/ AkoHa.

* JaneMcGonigal: ARG guru concerned about WoW junkies

DelivR: DaveHarper (of WinkSite)

* simple sharing (start by publisher/advertiser/smallBand, easy pass-along by people who use mobile instead of computer), easy patch together (video is on YouTube, push to MySpace fans), transcode to make it work on any device

* focus on individual item being shared, track spread

* also bundle of objects around an event

* during pass-along, add comments, leverage SocialNetworking

BarackObama is considering HillaryClinton as his SecretaryOfState. I'm not really clear on what her ForeignPolicy experience is, and I don't think she's fought against the WarOnIraq at all.

Plus she's a "crappy":http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2008/11/19/2008-11-19_team_obama_thinks_hillary_clintons_peopl.html manager.

ArnoldKling "says":http://www.techcentralstation.com/081505A.html the US needs 250 states to improve AccountabilIty. *There are two components to this reform proposal. One component is to reduce the size of the local units of government. My thinking is that this would increase the power of ordinary voters and reduce the power of special interests. The other idea is to "layer" the electoral process for Congressmen and Senators (UsCongress). The problem with DirectDemocracy is that each legislator represents too many voters, so that accountability does not take place. Instead, I am proposing that we "elect the electors." That is, we would vote for state legislators, who in turn would vote for Congressmen and Senators. The number of state legislators would be sufficiently small that mass-market, money-driven politics would be less important. Direct persuasion would be more important.*

Should this tie to CityRegion boundaries?

Or maybe we need the NineNationsOfNorthAmerica?

z2008-10-28-TimeCapsuleFlakiness

A few different times the TimeCapsule has started flaking out: the light in the front starts flashing red, and even though Macs seem to be connecting to it, they can't get outside connections. I suspect this may happen when there's a guest using a PC laptop, but am not positive.

* after "this":http://www.amazon.com/review/R32VRY968TNIMV I manually set the channel to 8 (it was using 11 a little while ago, and a number of other networks were too). We'll see if that helps.

Nov18 update: the problem seems less frequent, but hasn't gone away completely.

A couple possibilities

* CableModem service might be flaking out

* maybe some non-current LapTop, like my old IBook which TheBoys use occasionally, or the babysitter's ThinkPad, might be causing problems, like DaveWiner's NetBook issues. [z2008-10-17-EeepcUnder300]

Wow, BestBuy "has":http://www.jkontherun.com/2008/10/asus-breaks-sub.html the EeePc (900a) NetBook for $299! (Looks "like":http://www.target.com/ASUS-8-9-Netbook-Computer-Linux/dp/B001E1J1R2/ TarGet has it too.) So tempting, but I can't really think of a time when I'd carry this instead of my MacBook....

(This weighs 2.2lbs, MacBook weights 4.5lbs, OLPC weights 3.2lbs.)

Related: DaveWiner "just":http://www.scripting.com/stories/2008/10/16/justBoughtAnMsi.html bought "an":http://justnetbooks.com/shop.php?c=Wind&n=541966&i=B001H0GEW0&x=MSI_Wind_U100_279US_10_Inch_Mini_Laptop_16_GHz_Intel_Atom_1_GB_RAM_160_GB_Hard_Drive_6_Cell_Battery_80211_bgnBT_XP_Home_White MsiWind, which weighs 2.6lbs, and gives you a hard drive and lasts 6hrs.

* Hmm, the EeePc 900 series "has":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASUS_Eee_PC#Battery_controversy had some battery controvery, but battery life doesn't sound any better than the MSI, though that could be reality-vs-fake-spec issues....

* Update: Dave "sent":http://www.scripting.com/stories/2008/10/22/todayTheMsiWindReallyWentB.html the MSI back.

* It "sounds":http://www.jkontherun.com/2008/11/why-is-the-msi.html like others are having issues.

Went and bought a 1TB TimeCapsule. Considered saving money, decided it wasn't worth making myself nuts, esp with my wife's machine having all out DigitalCamera stuff on it.

Sept13: actually set it up and started it going. It's replacing the WiFi hub we had in place. Because of that, decided to just let it do its first BackUp via WiFi despite slower speed. It took 24hrs to back up 50GB - at 20hrs it said it was only half-done.

Have had WiFi hub and CableModem stored in a basket, with a lid, with other baskets on top of it. Obviously that's not going to do for a hotter item like a HardDrive.

* The problem is that to move it over closer to JiHi's desktop means dealing with that wall not having power nor CableModem. But already obviously have extension cord going over there for DeskTop, so power really isn't issue. I guess I'll pull along the EtherNet cable connecting the TimeCapsule to the CableModem.

* argh, have to drag another EtherNet cable from the TimeCapsule back to the VoIP box. Or else put the VoIP box over near the DeskTop too, which would require moving the handset/base over there, too.

* moved just the TimeCapsule, and strung 2 EtherNet cables back and forth.

TedStevens may have been re-elected to the UsSenate representing Alaska, despite being convicted last week. He *could* actually keep his seat, unless he either resigns, or the senate votes to expel him.

If he leaves, "a":http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/11/5/161042/942 variety of things could occur, including SarahPalin running for that seat in a special election.

Nov18: it finally looks like Stevens lost.

Who said this is media? Media is something you can buy and sell. Media contains inventory. Media contains blank spaces. Consumers weren't trying to generate media. They were trying to talk to somebody. So it just seems a bit arrogant... We hijack their own conversations, their own thoughts and feelings, and try to monetize it.*

Carlson himself suggests: *First, extend FacebookConnect to online retail stores. Second, analyze users' spending behavior and activity on Facebook, make that data anonymous and sell it to marketers. Third, turn on PersonalAd-s (ClassifiedAds) and charge more than the New York Times does - about $48/week.*
